The increasing pollution in Delhi (India) compelled IODA (India Open Data Association) to create open environmental data for citizens’ awareness. Oizom helped IODA to install Polludrone units across Delhi to monitor different particulate matter generation and its source location. The data is visible in a mobile app (Air quality modeling software) to aware people of the current situations to take relevant actions.
Delhi stands at the 11th position when it comes to the most polluted cities in India with an average PM2.5 concentration at 113.5 micrograms per cubic meter. Delhi has faced the highest smog in India in recent years. This sudden drastic change in environmental conditions is due to the increasing level of pollutants in the ambient air. The environmental health degradation of the city is eventually turning out to be fatal to the residents. According to a study, the polluting condition in Delhi leads to 10000-30000 annual deaths. This severe condition has awakened the people to be aware of the city’s environment and the air quality they breathe. To be aware people of their environmental condition, real-time data monitoring has to be done. People need to know the current pollution levels whenever they step out of their homes. It helps them take preventive measures for avoiding extreme exposure to air pollution. Presently, no such technology is available to track its environmental health and inform the residents about it.
India Open Data Association, a non-profit organization that promotes and supports different open data initiatives in India. It is clear to execute a possible solution using open data. IODA’s prime motive was to make the air-quality data available for every citizen and provide suggestive actions to prevent the health hazards of pollution. Oizom installed 40 Polludrones across Delhi to monitor the ambient air quality and share the data through a visualization platform http://openenvironment.indiaopendata.com/#/dashboard/ created by Oizom. India Open Data Association believes that air quality data can generate public awareness and trigger suggestive actions to solve the problems which are of deep public interest. Through smart algorithms, the portal also gives suggestive actions for implementation as per the pollution level. One of the objectives was to motivate and invite developers to develop an intuitive application using the data. Therefore, the real-time data from the monitors were made available using OPEN APIs under Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) License.
Through real-time air quality information from the smart reports generated, IODA concluded that the air pollution level in most of the areas of Delhi is highest during the peak hours – 0830 to 1100 hours and 1900 to 2200 hours. During these peak hours, the concentration of PM2.5 and CO2 is the highest in the environment. The data can be visualized live on the Oizom’s visualization platform through which citizens of Delhi are now aware of the environmental hazards and can take relevant actions to prevent its health impact. The authorities have already laid out GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) based on the pollution data.
