An independent measurement is a measurement obtained under conditions where the result is not influenced by the response or measurement taken immediately before it. To ensure that two measurements are considered independent, they should be separated by a time interval of at least four response times, allowing the instrument or sensor sufficient time to respond to a change in the measured parameter and reach a stable condition. This separation helps minimize carryover effects and ensures that successive measurements represent distinct measurement events.
