Outliers are individual data points that differ significantly from the surrounding or expected values within a dataset. In air quality monitoring, an outlier may appear as a measurement that is unusually higher or lower than nearby observations or the overall pattern of the data. Outliers can result from genuine short-term changes in environmental conditions, but may also be caused by power or network fluctuations, equipment malfunction, sensor errors, interference, or other measurement anomalies.
