Windrose
Definition
wind rose, map diagram that summarizes information about the wind at a particular location over a specified time period. A wind rose was also, before the use of magnetic compasses, a guide on mariners’ charts to show the directions of the eight principal winds. The modern wind rose used by meteorologists gives the percentage of the time the wind blows from each direction during the observation period; it sometimes shows the strengths of these winds and the percentage of the time calm air or light winds are observed.
Definition and Description
A violation of air quality, in the context of environmental regulations and standards, occurs when the concentration of one or more air pollutants in a specific location exceeds the allowable limits or thresholds established by governmental authorities or environmental agencies. These allowable limits, often referred to as air quality standards or criteria, are set to safeguard public health, protect the environment, and ensure that the quality of the air remains within acceptable levels. Windrose diagrams are commonly used in meteorology, climatology, and environmental studies to summarize and visualize wind patterns and prevailing wind directions for a given location. They provide valuable insights into local and regional climate, weather patterns, and are helpful for activities such as urban planning, agriculture, and renewable energy site selection (e.g., wind farm placement).
